Tisha B’Av
Tisha means the 9th, so Tisha B’Av is the 9th of Av (the 5th month of the Jewish calendar), which usually falls sometime in August.
Tisha B’Av is a full fast day (no food no drink), like Yom Kippur (but much less widely observed). It is a day of mourning for the loss of both the first and second temples. Both, we are told, destroyed on this day. It was also the day, in 1492 CE, that Jews were expelled from Spain. In the synagogue, the Book of Lamentations is read and mourning prayers are said.
